FROM THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW CARS WELL!
Every year over 10 million automobile radiators are replaced or reconditioned in the United States… many of them could have been kept in service for many additional miles if this new, and patented device been part of the car’s original cooling system.
A large number of the radiators replaced each year are not leakers or steamers as one might imagine. They are units which have had their cooling capacities diminished or completely plugged-up by restricted coolant flow through their internal passageways … a condition that can be prevented in most circumstances by this inline coolant filter, the “TRAP”.
Why do these passageways get clogged in the first place, and where do the particles that clog them come from? Well, dirt and other contaminants can enter any system from the outside, but most of the problems with a modern radiator are found within the “semi-sealed” environment of the car’s engine and cooling system. As pieces of gasketing materials and sealants begin to wear and break away, as water pump bearings and shafts deteriorate, as coolant-borne minerals calcify, as rubber hoses deteriorate and deposits shake loose, a veritable armada of materials heads toward (and eventually plug up) the tiny passages that make up the radiator’s core. Studies show us that, surprisingly, the greatest producer of solid blockage-causing materials are the engine block itself!
Most every car motor is produced by first “sand casting” an engine block, then machining it to match all its peripherally mounted components, In this process, a reasonable amount of sand is retained within the engine block after deep flushing of the sand casting during manufacture. Some of the passageways are just too f low- restrictive to allow an adequate flush, while other areas actually “capture” sand particles with molten metal during initial molding.
Auto manufacturers are not unaware of this potentially damaging residue. They address it in many ways, but the most common is that they apply an internal sealant to the block after casting in an attempt to keep any foreign materials from migrating within the engine after assembly.
The stark reality is that this sealant, not unlike any other paint or coating, eventually breaks down and releases the captive casting materials…. And additionally, it even adds to the mess with it’s own flakes and chips heading toward the radiator passages to do even more dirty work.
Is there a solution short of replacing a radiator every time one gets plugged up? The answer, thankfully now, is yes.
Starting with an idea so simple that you’ll wonder why YOU hadn’t thought of it yourself, the new “Trap” Radiator Filter works directly between the thermostat and the radiator in the radiator’s coolant return line. Once in place, it TRAPS VIRTUALLY ALL-LARGE SOLID CONTAMINANTS that flow through your car’s engine every hour it’s in operation.
The “Trap” Radiator Filter is SAFE, It’s interior chamber fully compensates for any flow restricting introduced by the filter screen material by doubling the actual surface area of the radiator’s return line at the point of filtration. The “Trap” also has a built-in safety, precut in the form of a perforation line, that will break open and pass unfiltered coolant back through the system, in case of poor service.
The “Trap” Radiator Filter is easily installed. Even an inexperienced do-it-yourselfer can install the “Trap” in 15 minutes or less! NO “specialty tools” are required.

FROM THE INVENTOR
Every once in a while idea comes along that seems so obvious and solves such a glaring problem that one wonders how we got along without it. Just an idea has been turned into what will soon be an indispensable part of every car engine with a cooling system; it’s called, The “Trap”.
The “Trap” is an inline filter I invented for the sole purpose of filtering particles from the cooling system of an engine before they get to the radiator. The “Trap”, prevents clogging of the rectangular tubes, eliminating costly and needless repairs ranging anywhere from $300-$800. The “Trap” is a much needed and long overdue device. It is an economical one time buy, simple, do-it-yourself installation and maintenance.
This is how I came up with the concept for The “Trap”:
In 1987, I purchased a brand new Mercedes-Benz. I maintained the car over and above the manufacturer’s service recommendations. In the summer of ’91, I drove to San Francisco in 93-98 degree temperatures. My car was just about to overheat and as a result of driving with high temperatures, I lost my catalytic converter and turbocharger. Monetary damages were to the tune of $3,200.00.
At that time, I thought that in hot weather, it was normal for cars to overheat. Ever since I purchased the car, I had replaced the coolant and flushed the engine and the radiator once or twice a year. I believed that my radiator was functioning at 100% working capacity. Throughout 1992, whenever I drove in the city or used the air conditioning system I closely monitored the engine temperature gauge and each time the temperature gauge was always above normal.
I called the Mercedes-Benz service department to inform them of this problem and the first question they asked me was, “How many miles are on the car?” When I replied the car had a total of 93,000 miles, their response was, “Radiators have to be replaced every three to four years”. I had my radiator tested for the level of performance and discovered it was functioning only at a 60% capacity. Then, I had my radiator replaced to the tune of $595.00, I requested the return of the core. I went back to my office and investigated further.
I discovered something that I hadn’t known. Today’s new radiators are being manufactured with plastic head covers-they can no longer be rebuilt or repaired. They must be replaced with a new radiator! How can one avoid expensive and unfair repair?
Being an engineer, I investigated what caused the clogging and plugging of the radiator. I then realized that the coolant served its purpose well. The metal inside my radiator was clean and shiny, but that didn’t stop the loose particles from the sand cast engine from clogging the down spot tubes in the radiator. That’s when I got the idea for the radiator filter.
I figured that if I had a filter system to trap the “rocks” BEFORE they got to the radiator, I could save myself from needless repairs and expense. I also realized that I had no idea how much other damages and mechanical malfunctioning were occurring because of the falling and loose particles created by the friction and heat of the coolant. To say nothing of the ill effects on the environment.
In addition to eliminating the problems of clogged radiators, The “Trap” will also produce optimum performance in any car, it will increase fuel efficiency, make the air-conditioning system run better and save wear and tear on water pumps, rubber hoses, gaskets, plastic parts, seals and the electrical system. INCREASED EFFICIENCY AVOIDS TIME CONSUMING AND COSTLY BREAKDOWNS.
The “Trap” is not an accessory! It is an improvement over O.E.M. designed to benefit the consumer.
Technical Information
Coolant from the engine block is trapped by the thermostat until the engine reaches normal temperature. Then the coolant flows via the upper radiator hose into the radiator traveling through the radiator. It is cooled by the fan and pumped by the water pump from the bottom of the radiator into the engine block.
The “Trap” radiator filter is installed in the upper radiator hose of both new and older type radiators to avoid engine block deposits from entering the radiator, It requires less than fifteen minutes to install using only a knife and screwdriver as tools, It is a simple, do-it-yourself job. The filter housing is good for the life of the car and longer! The filter screen in the aluminum version can be taken out and washed every 7,000 miles for best performance. The “Trap” is available in aluminum and can be manufactured out of high-temperature resistance plastic.
